10 Things to Buy with Your Tax Refund

I’m all about not letting someone have my money interest free for a year, but if you’re like me, you’re probably getting some sort of tax refund this year. So what are you going to do with it? The last couple years I’ve been spending it on things that will;

A. Save me money on food in the long run.
B. Further our quest for healthy eating/living

10 things you could buy with your return:

  1. Bulk meats – we usually save some money for both my husbands hunting costs and for part of a cow in the fall.
  2. Bulk baking supplies – flour, sugar, grains, etc.
  3. Buy some fat – stock up on coconut oil, EVOO, organic butter
  4. Freezer – a great spot to put summer produce!
  5. CSA membership – find a local farm that offers a CSA and you’ll receive produce all summer long
  6. Seeds – try planting your own garden, even if it’s just a few pots on your patio
  7. Chickens! – not for everyone of course, but hopefully this year we’ll be buying chicks for eggs and meat
  8. Kitchen gadgets – a nice mixer is such a help in the kitchen! This year I hope to get a grain mill.
  9. Non-toxic pots and pans – go cast iron or enamel
  10. Glass containers – ditch your plastic and buy some glass storage containers

What’s on your list to buy this year?

  1. Unfortunately we’re not expecting a refund, but I would like to get one of those fancy sprouting things where the water changes itself.

  2. love, love, love having chickens! they are not only a source of eggs and meat, but truly entertainment. They are such social creatures, and watching them peck the ground and scratch it provide hours of family fun during warm weather….or maybe we just need to get out more often!!

  3. Great post topic idea. I know a lot of people that just splurge away their tax returns. I typically save mine, BUT, I love the idea of investing in chickens. (Don’t have a yard yet though . . .)

  4. Kelley Ahearn says:

How fun it would be to just spend it!!! We pay our property taxes…

  5. Next year I have big plans for our tax return. This year we got out of debt…. woohoo! Next year I’m planning to get a vitamix, a chest freezer, grain mill, half a cow, lots of bulk foods, etc.

  6. We got a RO water filter with our tax refund!!!

  7. Sorry I’m seeing this late. . . BUT I got a tax return this year and used it to “invest” in a local food co-op CSA. . . if I prepay for 11 months worth of farm milk, eggs, and meat I get an extra month free. I thought it was a great way to stimulate the local economy and improve my health. =)

  8. We are intending to finally get a nice big freezer!
