The Sugar Detox Challenge: week 2

So how’d you do with week one? Find a lot in your house that needed purging? I’ve obviously gotten myself into some good buying habits over the last year or so and was pleasantly surprised to find only one item that will be off limits for me.
At one point, my table would have been full of different items! Luckily, I can replace this with an organic version and the taste difference isn’t that noticeable. Now I must also say, I won’t be throwing this out. My husband would have my head if I tossed any of his precious ketchup. To say the least, it’s almost a whole food group for him! So I marked it and will find something else to consume before I hit the stores to buy a replacement for me.

My main problem will be eating out. Not like we do a lot of it, but I tend to grab something in the checkout at the grocery store, or eat snacks I shouldn’t when I’m visiting folks. So I’ll have to be sure to reign in my sweet tooth outside the home!

So how did you do? Do you have pictures to share with the class? :-) I’ve set up a Mr. Linky at the bottom of the post so that you all can all join in. All you need to do is put a post up on your own blog about your success/achievements/struggles with the challenge along with any pics you may have to share (along with a link to this site), copy the permalink for that post (not your homepage url) and paste it into the form below. Easy Peasy, but if you have issues or haven’t done it before, let me know and I’ll help you out.

And if you don’t have a blog or don’t want to mess aorund with a whole post, you can upload your pics to the Sugar Detox Flickr Group page at http://www.flickr.com/groups/sugardetox/

Now that we know what’s off limits……… on to Week 2: Don’t consume HFCS!

Keep those off limit foods just that…off limits! Starting today, stay away from anything with high fructose corn syrup in it. Be especially careful when eating out. Skip the sodas and always check labels. Carry a water bottle and snacks with you to avoid having to buy something while you’re out. Watch what you’re buying in the grocery store. If you need help finding a replacement item, leave a comment on this post and I or someone else may be able to direct you in the right way. We’re all about community around here right? Without support failing always seems an option, so remember that other folks are out ther doing the same thing!

And while there really isn’t any type of good sugar, don’t worry about anything that’s not HFCS. Focus on just this one item this week, we’ll tackle the rest later! It’s all about baby steps! And keep track of what you’re eating and next week we’ll have another Mr. Linky update so we can see how everyone is doing and gain some support along the way. (And take some pics of those desserts/beverages/foods you eat that still have sugar in them that we’ll be giving up in a bit)

My family’s favorite ketchup is the Muir Glen brand, if that helps at all. :)

Well, I don’t feel so bad now. I thought we were supposed to stop eating the HFCS last week, not just get rid of it. I did great in my own home, but I caved at my girlfriend’s house, where the soda is always well-stocked. Let’s see if I can stay on the wagon this week!

I was surprised at how many condiments have HFCS. I thought I was pretty good at buying healthy food, but there was still a surprising number of items to purge. What an eye opener!

    Thanks!
    Susan :)

I wasn’t super surprised by the things that had HFCS — and we didn’t have that much in our fridge or pantry. Most of them are things that I have been buying for my husband since he is kind of a “label guy” and simply can’t go without, ummm…let’s say Miracle Whip for example! LOL

There were a few items that I will need to figure out different alternatives for, but I think I know what to get to start the shift. Now on to not eating it…a whole ‘nother challenge! :)

just fyi, heniz makes an organic version that tastes the same! I think everything except the last ingredient is organic and so that is what we’ve gone with at this point. I tried other brands but they didn’t give that same taste that we love.
