A slacker? No.

A bad blogger? Yes.

I hate when I just up and leave like this. Two posts in two weeks? Who am I anymore? :-) Well last week was uber crazy and then this week I HAD to get my garden planted. Cause I love me some super fresh, organic produce. So I’ve spent the week up to my elbows in dirt and having a blast getting dirty.

This morning I was all set to go out and take pictures of said garden, you know, to show you how beautiful it was, (weedy, but beautiful!) when I saw this.
No. Please no.

And then this:
At least it can be replanted.

But then this:No.

No,no,no!

That’s supposed to look like this:
The culprit?A deer. Which will now be referred to as “Dinner”.

Now to build a fence this weekend! “Oh, Honey!!!)

Has anyone had this happen to them? What did you do to keep them away?

By the way, I’ve got these planted:

  • Tomatoes – cherry, roma, and some “big” variety (currently w/ black trash bags over the soil around them since our nights are still quite cool)
  • Cucumbers (well, I have one mound out of three left anyways)
  • Broccoli
  • Zucchini
  • Yellow Squash
  • Green Beans
  • Cabbage
  • Green Pepper ( 3 out of 6 left)
  • Jalepenos
  • Strawberries (which actually are not doing well since the bees aren’t pollinating them!)
  • and once hubby tills the last small part of the garden, I’ll put my herbs in the ground!

Do you garden? What’s your favorite thing to plant?

My husband says human hair or dog hair laid around the plants keep them away. I'm not sure how he knows this but I would trust him… he's an outdoor expert!

I agree with Kristin – human hair does the trick. We did that and have had good luck thus far. Sounds like you have a great garden in place! I too have been gardening and have my most recent update on my blog!

I just was talking to friends about this last night, and they said the human hair thing worked awesome–so I agree with Kristin. They told me it works b/c most animals don't like the smell of humans, so if the hair is around they will stay away!

I also planted all my plants in garden boxes this year (thanks to my hubby for building them!) and i haven't had problems so far. 2 years ago when I planted right in the ground most of my stuff got eaten. However, with deer, i'm sure they can get over a garden box… :) the boxes mainly help with smaller critters!

    good luck!

Yes! The smell of humans definitely keeps them out. We have used strong-smelling bar soap hung by string on stakes, and the rain washes it into the ground a bit…it does wonders for keeping the "human" smell around.

I kept it really small this year. We only have five tomato plants, but I just couldn't give them up. There is nothing like a fresh tomato. Hopefully they will still get watered after baby arrives.

Next year, I'm hoping my hubby will build me some raised beds and we'll be feasting on all kinds of home grown produce.

I remember reading a while ago that deer don't like onions so to plant them in a close row (circle?) around the things they like.

… However, the same book said that rabbits don't like marigolds & some of that keeps the rabbits out. My house bunny LOVED the marigolds i brought in & chomped them down quickly.

Good luck! We have squirrels to contend with.
