Food Inc.

Last night I had the privilege of going to see the movie Food Inc. And you know, although I’ve read about most of the things they talked about in the movie, it was totally different actually seeing it. I highly recommend this movie to everyone!

What’s it about you ask?

• Well, they covered how we got into the food industry mess that we’re in and how fast food has contributed to it.
• They covered the horrible debt cycle farmers are trapped in, and how “under the corporations thumb” they are.
• and the problem that we have with corn. (umm, that it’s in everything!)
• They talked about food safety and I have to admit, during that segment my stomach turned many times and I shed a couple tears while listening to a woman who lost her baby boy due to E. Coli.
• Feed lots and slaughterhouses were looked at and my stomach turned again. Seeing these poor animals and the horrible conditions they lived in made me sick. And it made me sad. Because I’m pretty positive God did not create these creatures to be treated so horribly.And he did not create them to eat what they currently eat.
• They also interviewed scientists and talked about engineered foods and GMOs (genetically modified foods)

I walked away from this movie glad that I have already made so many positive changes in the way we eat! Especially the fact that 90% of the meat I’ve bought the last year has been grass fed and local. And it also got me thinking about a few other things I can still change. So check your local theaters and see if you can find a showing somewhere or check here to see when it might be coming near you.

I also had the pleasure of meeting up with Kelly the Kitchen Kop at the theater along with both friends of mine and hers. We had a nice group of folks!
It bothers me though that no one except the folks who are already interested in this stuff, actually know this movie is around. Above and beyond our group there were only a handful of folks. There were no big signs out front for it (which I’m sure has only to do with the fact that this is not a big budget movie) and check out the sign just outside the theater:
Are we serious here folks? This is a piece of blue printer paper with the movie title typed onto it and taped up where a nice sign should be! If only I could get everyone in town to go see this!

A long story short, this is a great movie, wish I could hang out with Kelly more (she’s so fun!), and now my mind is going over all of my food choices again!
