@Tarra, Yup - exercise is the one thing I have a problem finding time for. ;-) Though most people that have told me they specifically lost weight on paleo, did so just because of the loss of grains. Todd did! He lost 10 pounds I think in 3 months doing nothing different. But one of the big issues with dealing with adrenal fatigue is that energy is hard to come by....... It's better now, but was definitely at it's worst when we did a strict primal diet - and it wasn't the diet, but stress that caused it in the years previous. We're about 80% primal now as I've found energy wise, that's where I feel my best. :-)

Donielle,
I did a began a detox program through my N.D. three weeks ago. Through adding some foods back in, I'm going back to gluten and dairy free for 3 weeks now. Then, I'm going to add one food back in and see how I feel. I'm pretty positive I'm gluten sensitive just based on how great I have felt up until I had bread with my eggs this past Sunday. It is definitely overwhelming and a shift in thinking. Eating whole foods and new foods is definitely what is keeping me going. I can't imagine how much more overwhelming it would be if we were still 100% on the SAD. I wonder now how much gluten played into my fertility issues getting pregnant with our little man. Amazing how much gluten can affect in our bodies!

Hey Donielle,

I am in the process of transitioning our family into a paleo/primal lifestyle. Will and I are going to start by doing the Whole30, and are planning to keep the girls as close to the same standards, as we can. In reading what was written above, it dawned on me that you did not mention anything about exercising. Did you do any regular form of exercise while you were primarily paleo? Mark and most every other writer that I have read anything from, include regular exercise of some form in their recommendations. Mark has specific guidelines in Primal Blueprint, and many others promote Crossfit. Anyhow, if you weren't then I would feel it safe to say that is why your weight didn't experience much change. Just my 2 cents :) I have been working out 3x week regularly for the last 4 weeks, running, strength training, and doing pilates, and I have noticed a definite change in my weight. I am excited to see what is going to happen when we begin the Whole30 and continue primal living :)

i agree about people assuming something is healthy just because it says "gluten free". some people know just enough to THINK they are making healthy choices when they really aren't. i used to work with kids with autism, lots of them were on gluten free casein free diets, but they were still eating lots of fruit snacks and jelly beans and such.

another thing many people dont realize is that you are are truly gluten intolerant, skipping one meal with gluten wont help. you need to go for weeks or months to see a difference.

If you have any interest in gluten free, please read the book: "Wheat Belly". You will be convinced by the facts that we do NOT need to be eating wheat. I have reduced our wheat intake by 95% and my husband and I have lost weight and felt more energy. When we do indulge in it too much we both find that our joints are stiff and hurt. Read the book to understand more- it's fascinating!!

This is so nice to have the pros, cons and facts of being gluten-free outlined in one place. Thank you! I've been researching celiac and a gluten-free diet, because I've wondered if gluten might be adversely affecting my daughter. My sister has also been experimenting with a gluten-free diet to see if it will help eliminate some problems she has suffered. I'll refer her to this article. Thanks so much!

@Kira, Oh Kira, I'm so sorry for the loss of your precious baby. Every miscarriage is different, even the physical part. Some women experience water breaking and the baby born separate from the placenta. Others deliver the baby still in the gestational sac.The further along you are, the more like birthing it can be, with labor pains and everything. So if you choose to miscarry naturally, read up on managing labor pains. It'll help when they set in and are magnified by your grief.

A friend brought me some Dr. Christopher's False Unicorn/Lobelia (an herbal blend) which helped my body let go of the baby. A bit more painlessly and it slowed the bleeding. Many women have good experience with it quickening the process.

I'm so sorry you have to go through this.

@Jessica K, Interesting thought! Diabetes is very prevalent in my family. So I'm sure I have a degree of blood sugar/insulin issues. I just can't seem to handle the super starchy stuff. I ate corn chowder (with corn and potatoes) the last 2 days...I felt like my belly bloated up like a balloon. And I was so impatient/moody yesterday. I am also learning just how much sugar impacts me. I'm trying very hard to only have honey. I definitely avoid refined sweeteners. But sometimes I eat a little maple syrup or cane sugar. Even those aren't good for me, though, I know. Sugar is evil :P

Thank you for this. I just found out Monday that the baby I'm carrying died a few weeks ago (I'm supposed to be 16 weeks along, she's the size of a 13 week baby). Now I'm waiting for the miscarriage, and I've been googling like mad, because I am afraid and I want to know what it's going to be like. My doctor says because I'm so far along I'll probably need a D&C, but I hate the idea.
It feels like I woke up in a hostile foreign land. I just want to go home.

While it is true that most of the choices through the WIC program are SAD type foods, it is possible to eat a real food diet while getting assistance from WIC and food stamps. My family is a testimony to this. My husband is in school and we had an unexpected (but very much wanted and loved!) baby nine months after we got married, thus making it necessary (in our opinion) for me to quit my job and stay home. Prior to quitting my job, we ate a real food diet and I can tell you that NOTHING has changed since using WIC and food stamps to pay for our food. We are blessed with a local health food store that accepts food stamps. I am able to purchase pastured chicken and pork here, as well as farm fresh eggs. I am able to get local and organic produce during the winter at our local Hy-Vee, and in the spring/summer/early fall, we have a wonderful local Farmer's Market that accepts food stamps. When we were not on food stamps, I bought eggs and meat straight from the source for less than I spend on it now, but the point is that I am still able to feed my family a real food diet while on government assistance. So, please don't led your readers to believe that all families on WIC and food stamps eat a SAD diet because that is simply not true. Everyone is able to make informed choices for their family regardless of where the money for their food comes from.
