Frequently Asked Questions

What topics are covered in this book?

Chapter One – Introduction on Natural Fertility

So what is natural fertility anyway? It definitely doesn’t mean that you go home and not change anything. There are plenty of changes we can make in our diet and lifestyle to increase our overall health and fertility – our bodies can heal when we give them what they need.

Chapter Two – Cleansing the body with whole foods

Our bodies are over worked with the constant exposure to chemicals and toxins that we breathe in, absorb through our skin, and ingest with our foods. Our world is more complicated than ever, with thousands upon thousands of synthetic chemicals that are so common now in our every day lives. Many of these having direct impact on our reproductive system. I cover the dangers of these toxic chemicals and give simple solutions to boosting the body’s natural detoxification system as well as how to use food and herbs to increase its effectiveness.

Chapter Three – Natural Living

No longer is natural living only to save the environment! Keeping pur bodies free of toxins is one of the best ways to improve our fertility and allow our children to be the healthiest they can be.

I’ll walk room to room through the home and readers will learn how to detoxify each one with recommendations on clean living. Simple solutions to homemade cleaners and beauty products will also be given in the last chapter as ways to not only lower the toxic body burden, but to save money as well.

Chapter Four – Exercise for fertility

Exercise for fertility doesn’t have to be rigorous, yet being a couch potato is doing us no good either. Outlined will be simple steps to keep moving and increase the functioning of the reproductive system.

Chapter Five – Natural Family Planning

A woman’s body is an awesome thing! This chapter will discuss the in’s and out’s of basic charting so that a woman can learn exactly what her body is doing throughout the cycle. This will help pinpoint not only when fertility is at its highest point of the cycle, but can also help diagnose problems that can be corrected.

Chapter Six – Real foods

We’ve been duped! Our modern society has followed a diet that has us on a collision course with failure. Instead of nourishing and building our bodies, we’re quickly becoming malnourished, even though we have plenty of food to eat.

Traditional cultures (you know, people who lived before cars and electricity and modern foods) spent months preparing their bodies for pregnancy with food. They were blessed with fertile bodies and healthy offspring and we need to get back to understanding the “why” and “how” to prepare our bodies, what foods to eat, and how to prepare our foods for the most nutrients possible.

You’ll find out exactly what “real” food is and why your body needs it!

Chapter Seven– Super Foods for Fertility

While all foods, and eating a variety of them, are beneficial for health, there are certain foods that will nourish your body specifically for conception and pregnancy. And super foods aren’t just found deep in the Amazon rainforest (though we’ll talk about those too), so local foods to help increase nutrients in the body will be outlined along with their health benefits.

Chapter Eight – What not to Eat

We all know that eating junk foods like pizza, pop, and candy aren’t good for our bodies, but many people don’t know which modern “health” foods are also damaging our bodies. In this age of the food industry, the food we place in our bodies is far from natural. From conventional agriculture that places millions of pounds of chemicals on to our food each year, to the manufacturers who destroy nutrients while processing it, to the way we cook it in our own homes, we’ve destroyed our own bodies and our health. Find out what foods you should stay away from and learn of some simple substitutions.

Chapter Nine – The “Perfect” Fertility Diet

There are so many thoughts and ideas on diets; low carb, low-fat, Nourishing Traditions, Paleo, vegetarian, vegan. But diets aren’t one-size fits all, so I’ll outline which dietary steps are the most important to make as well as they pros and cons of the aforementioned diets.

Basic fertility diet guidelines are included to get your started.

Chapter Ten – Alternative Therapies for Infertility

No longer just for “hippies” but often overlooked as silly little plants or weeds, herbs are actually highly medicinal and can provide an abundance of healing to your body. Herbs have been used for thousands of years and are still used in over 3/4 of the world for treatment of illnesses. They offer a safe alternative to modern medicines and can be used to ‘jump start’ the hormonal system.

Along with herbal treatments, there are many alternative health practitioners that work through chiropractic, acupuncture, and massage therapy to bring your body back into balance. We’ll talk about what works and what options you have outside of the conventional medical model.

Chapter Eleven – Stress

Everyone who has tried to get pregnant for some time has often heard the advice “just relax!” But can you? Is stress even an issue? Stress, lack of sleep, and lack of energy have direct links to your fertility, as does the physical stress that an unhealthy diet causes, we’ll find out how they all play a role in the hormone balance and the quality of the egg and sperm.

Chapter Twelve – Your Fertility Plan

Information does nothing when you don’t know how to put it to good use. Throughout this book you will have learned the in’s and out’s of natural fertility, but in this chapter I’ll help you devise a plan to healthy conception.

Chapter Twelve – Recipes for real food and natural living

Knowing how you should eat doesn’t help much if you don’t have recipes to use in the kitchen. Recipes and simple instructional will be given for making your own “real food”, as well as beauty and cleaning products.

What if I’m not particularly dealing with infertility?

Whether or not you’re “fertility impaired”, it’s important to nourish your body and build up nutrient stores before pregnancy. Not only does it help promote proper and healthy development of your little one, it can also help lessen pregnancy complications like morning sickness and preeclampsia. It can also help keep you strong in health and spirit during pregnancy and labor, while also allowing you to heal and rebuild in the post partum period.

Our kids are also dealing with many modern diseases like ADD, autism, allergies, and lowered immune systems. Eating a whole foods diet can help prevent problems like this and give them a great start in such a pivotal developmental period.

Are you a Christian?

Why yes, I am. And I even talk about it in the book, though it’s not a faith-based book. I talk openly about my spirituality because I think it is important – we all have a spiritual nature and it’s who I am. In many instances I share why I came to certain ideas and conclusions (particularly about alternative therapies) based on my beliefs.

We all come from different faith backgrounds so I hope you’ll be able to take what I talk about and use it to apply to your own beliefs, just like what I do when I read a book that has beliefs different from my own. You can also take comfort in that all of my research and information is also based on science and facts. :-)

What diagnosed fertility problems does the book cover?

I specifically talk about PCOS (poly cystic ovary syndrome), endometriosis, luteal phase defects, and male factor infertility. And in the chapter on the “Perfect” Fertility Diet I also give some basic recommendations based on what ‘normally’ helps people in those situations.

That’s not to say of course that if you’re dealing with other causes of infertility (MTHFR, unexplained, etc) that you’re out of luck! This book is full of information that will benefit anyone and help to balance your hormones.

I have specific dietary needs – will the nutrition information in the book still be of use?

You betcha. I even cover the pros and cons of different whole foods diets (paleo/primal, vegetarian and vegan, Weston A. Price, etc) as well as elimination diets. Even if you have food allergies or intolerances, you’ll find a lot of information that will help you use the foods you CAN eat in ways that optimize nutrition.

Why do you focus so much on food?

Three entire chapters are completely devoted to food, with another one containing multiple recipes. I do this because food is our foundation – what we put in our bodies becomes our body. You can’t build a house on a foundation poorly put together! It’ll fall and crumble. Every bite you take is used in a way that produces the cells in your body and you want to make sure you’re nourishing yourself to the best of your knowledge.

I’ve also found great healing in eating a whole foods diet, as have friends of mine and readers here at NKU. So while we can also use alternative forms of medicine, it all needs to start with what you eat.
